When: Wednesday October 8, 2003
Thanks to arrangements made by Pacific\Westeel, Siemens-Dematic (Rapistan) and
Tibbett and Britten Group North America, we are very pleased to offer a tour of
the SCM Distribution Centre in Mississauga. This facility is one of the largest
and most highly mechanized DC's in Canada and is one of three operated by SCM.
The 1,100,000 sq. ft., 35-foot clear height facility combines continuous flow
cross-docking with order selection to achieve daily through-put up to 250,000
cartons per day. Eighty Receiving and one-hundred-twenty Shipping doors are
provided, with over half served directly by loading or unloading conveyors.
Several order-picking technologies are integrated to suit the different merchandise
categories. These include full-case label-pick to conveyor; pick-to-light and
put-to-light split-case, both with conveyor output; and voice-directed put-to-pallet
for non-conveyable items. The conveyor system spans thirteen kilometres and
includes four automatic sorters. A fleet of eighty lift trucks with RF data
terminals handles the palletized materials.
The evening will start at 5:00 p.m. with a reception and dinner at the Mississauga
Convention Centre, which is located at the north-west corner of Hurontario Street
and Derry Road, just north of the SCM D.C.. After dinner representatives from
the three companies will provide a brief presentation on the facility and systems.
We will then proceed to SCM for the tour. A Q&A session will wrap up the evening.
